Art Inspired by Nature

  • Gyotaku Technique

Gyotaku is a traditional form of Japanese art that began as a way for fishermen to keep a record of the fish they caught. They would apply sumi ink to one side of a freshly caught fish, then cover the fish with rice paper and rub to create an exact image of the fish.

Kiefer utilizes this technique to print locally caught fish on pottery with incredible detail. Kiefer legally catches the fish himself and uses a variety of fish including Northern Pike, Walleye and Bass.

  • Nerikomi Technique

Nerikomi is a decorative process established in Japan that involves stacking colored clay and then slicing through the cross section to reveal patterns in the clay.

Kiefer utilizes this technique to create dimensional and unique patterns by layering blue clay throughout the pot that is revealed when carved. The patterns can be shown through carving across the entire pot, or only on selected areas on the pot.
